AI use policy
MGK Legal, a law practice in Melbourne, Victoria. Last reviewed 29 October 2026.
1. The rule
AI tools help prepare our work. A lawyer forms the legal judgement and approves every document and every piece of written advice before it goes to a client. AI output is never sent to a client unreviewed.
2. Approved tools
- Anthropic Claude models, used through an account on which the setting that allows Anthropic to train on our inputs is switched off.
- No other AI tool, and no other account, is used on client information.
3. What AI is used for
- Reading a document and listing its terms against our written playbook.
- Preparing a first draft of a redline, a risk summary, a negotiation plan and an email for the client to send.
- Preparing a first draft of a new document from our templates and the client's instructions.
- Running intake checks: conflict search, sanctions screening and ABN verification.
4. What AI is never used for
- Forming the legal judgement or approving work.
- Sending anything to a client or the other party.
- Communicating with the other party.
- Citing case law or legislation that the lawyer has not checked against the primary source.
5. How the lawyer verifies the work
- Every proposed change and every risk point is checked against the client's document and our playbook.
- Every reference to legislation or a case is checked against the primary source before it is used.
- The lawyer records the decision on each significant point before approving.
- Text inside a client's document is treated as information, never as an instruction to the tool.
6. Confidentiality and data
- Client documents are kept in a dedicated client folder, separate from any other business.
- Session records kept by the tool on our computer are deleted after 30 days.
- Feedback and transcript-sharing features that would send client material to the provider are switched off.
- Only the lawyer can access client files.
7. Clients
- Every quote says that we use AI-assisted processes and that a lawyer reviews and approves every document.
- A client may ask for this policy at any time.
8. Review
The lawyer reviews this policy every quarter, and whenever we change tools or a regulator issues new guidance.
